

Books Format Cheat Sheet


Front Matter:
1. Half Title Page: The title of the book without any other information.
2. Frontispiece: An illustration facing the title page.
3. Title Page: The full title of the book and subtitle if applicable, author's name.
4. Copyright Page: Copyright notice, ISBN, publishing and edition information, publisher's address, cataloging data, copyright notice for previously published material, and printing history.
5. Dedication: To whom the book is dedicated.
6. Epigraph: A quotation or saying that the author feels is relevant to the book.
7. Table of Contents: List of chapters and their corresponding page numbers.
8. Foreword: An introduction to the book by someone other than the author.
9. Preface: An introduction by the author explaining their qualifications or reasons for writing the book.
10. Acknowledgments: The author's thank-yous to people who helped with the book.
11. Prologue: An opening to the story that may provide background or set the tone.
Body Matter:
1. Chapters: The main content of the book, divided into chapters.
2. Headings and Subheadings: To organize content and improve readability.
3. Footnotes and Endnotes: Explanatory notes that give additional information or citations.
4. Illustrations, Graphs, and Charts: Visual elements that complement the text.
Back Matter:
1. Appendix: Supplementary information that would disrupt the flow of the text if included within the main body.
2. Glossary: Explanations of specialized words or terms.
3. Bibliography: A list of books or articles referred to or cited in the text.
4. Index: An alphabetical list of names, places, and subjects with page numbers.
5. Colophon: Information about the production of the book.
6. Afterword: A concluding section written by the author or another party.
Additional Elements:
• Page Numbers: Typically at the top or bottom of the page.
