...and just like that, here we were, The Flatlanders, riding on a bus from South Florida to Gainesville, Georgia.

Fear began to set in as we approached Amicalola Falls, where we would begin our almost 2,200 mile hike through the beautiful, but difficult Appalachian Trail.

Our camping pal, Sailor Jack, shared with us colorful memories of his 2021 AT hike. The more he talked about his adventures, the new friends he made, his triumphs and hardships, the more we wanted to hike the trail ourselves. Jack's experience and support prepared us for what was to come.

We the first hikers to arrive at Amicalola State Park. In fact, we even beat the sunrise. All was dark, other than the lights shining on the first of many signs we'd see along the nearly 2200 mile path that we were destined to walk.

The darkness made the task ahead seem even more daunting. Sailor Jack told us that the 8.8 mile approach trail, which was not considered part of the AT, was a badge of honor. It was an exhausting 604 steps (yikes!) up to the glorious falls. Each of us carried heavy backpacks full of gear that we'd need for the next 5 to 6 months. We were also stocked up on food for at least five to six days.

It seemed to take forever, but we finally made it (hallelujah!) to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, Springer Mountain.
